Old Timers Game

The old timers game is a tradition as old as time itself. It brings a new meaning to father son bonding. Each year at around the halfway point in the season WOBW's finest compete against a collection of dads associated with each player. The dads have self proclaimed themselves as the "Joint Chiefs" as it is the most senior leaders amongst the United States Department of Defense. So far the Joint Chiefs have played members of the league twice. They first competed in 2019 and once again in 2021. Since then the Old Timers game has not been played. Although the dads would like to consider this contest the "All Star Game", The event has gone down in WOBW history as the Old Timers Game.

In the first meeting between the dads and sons, the kids took the victory with a 13-8 final. All players in this game are picture above. The kids came out and grabbed an early lead but took their foot off the gas as they subbed in some of their inferior pitchers in to face the dads. While the dads talked a lot of smack only some of them could back it up. Thomas "Spida/Spider/Funcle" Benevento was one of them, as his pitches featured some of the most unpredictable movement the league had seen once he finally settled in. The Joint Chiefs; Bopp, Underwood, Brown and Luchette found ways to get on base but the same couldn't be said Spida's brother Michael Benevento. Benevento was one of the more frequent smack talkers but his lackluster play on the field made his talking less effective. All in all the game was a success and was in high demand the following year.

The second meeting between the sons and dads went a little differently. Many more dads and sons wanted to participate this time around and did so. We totaled 22 dads and sons so we were forced to split off into 2 teams of dads and 2 teams of sons to take on each other. Both games went similarly, the sons jumped out to an early lead when their better pitchers were in but because of new rules to try and make the game more competitive, once the non pitchers were forced to take the bump for the sons team, the dads were able to come back. That wasn't the only thing that handicapped the sons. The dads were also given an extra ball in the count and an extra out to work with. These handicaps propeled the dads to 2 victories in what was another great day at Skyview Stadium. We hope to play more in the future as this game is always a treat!
